Porterville, Tulare County
Porterville is named for Royal Porter Putnam, who kept a stage station on the Tule River and laid out the town in 1864. Citrus followed, and orange groves still climb the slopes east of the city. The Zalud House, an 1891 home preserved with its original furnishings, is open as a museum near Main Street.
